Taygetos is a relatively narrow mountain range with a long ridge, reaching 115 kilometres in length and 30 kilometres in width, covering a total area of 2,500 kilometres. With its rich flora (over 700 plant species make up the rare vegetation of Taygetos) and fauna - because of its size - of 25 exclusive endemic species, Taygetos is a flyway for migrating birds.
Many small villages of particular local character are located on the slopes of Taygetos, while a mountain refuge operates at 1,600 metres.
